How My Relationship with Social Media Has Shifted Since 2020
My relationship to social media has changed a lot since I began blogging and sharing my journey in 2020.
When I began creating content, I became aware of how fixated I would become on the metrics.
Truthfully, it would bother me so much when I didn’t get many likes or when I noticed certain people were not engaging with what I was posting. And, I knew this was coming from a place of seeking validation.
But, after reflecting, working on my self-love, taking many social media breaks, deleting my old accounts and now starting on this brand new account, I realize that I am in a better place.
Yes, I Get Zero Likes — But I Still Post Anyway
It’s not perfect but I realize it doesn’t bother me as much when I don’t get much engagement. You can even look through my last posts and how I got 0-1 likes lol…and I’m just like *shrugging shoulder & laughing emoji* 🤷🏻♀️😂
And, yes I am aware I have a brand new account and that I don’t have many followers.
I genuinely enjoy creating and expressing myself and I will continue to do so even if I am not getting much engagement.
Instagram has certainly changed over the past few years and it’s a lot to keep up with but I will continue to share as I want and the way I want.
I recently came across a post by the_dancinglight on IG where she wrote. . .
“Your number of followers doesn’t define the power of your art. Growth on Instagram and growth as an artist are not the same thing. The likes may drop, reach may fall…But if your heart is rising, you’re still moving in the right direction.”
And, this resonated so much as someone who is fairly new to creating. I discovered my creativity as a result of giving up alcohol and it has been by far one of the greatest gifts.
Staying Grounded in Why I Create
So when I create something whether it be a quote, poem, blog post, choreo, or reel sharing something in my heart, I definitely feel so good. I feel in touch with myself and inspired and I think that is what matters the most which is feeling your own expression through whatever it is that you are creating.
My hope is that I continue to remain grounded in why I create and express because of how it makes me feel, not for the metrics of social media.
