Being that I just announced that I am becoming a life coach, I thought I would write a blog post explaining what life coaching is in case anyone is curious to learn more about it.
What is life coaching?
Coaching is a partnership in which the coach and client collaborate to work on goals, develop a plan, and come up with strategies in order to help the client accomplish goals for their future.
How do coaches help you?
Different coaches have their own unique ways of supporting their clients in the coaching process.
However, in general, coaches help you through:
Asking you questions to help you develop more self-awareness/understanding and to guide you to look within for your own insight and answers.
Reflecting and processing with you what you bring to the session.
Brainstorming with you different strategies or approaches you can use to accomplish your goals or bring an idea to life.
Providing accountability
Overall, a life coach is like your cheerleader. They are really there to support you and guide you in your journey.
What are the different types of coaches?
There are so many kinds of coaches but here are some:
Life Coaches
Relationship Coaches
Career Coaches
Health Coaches
Spiritual Coaches
Business Coaches
Self-love Coaches
Confidence Coaches
The list can go on and on!
How does life coaching differ from therapy?
The best way to differentiate coaching by therapy is by thinking of coaching as being future focused and therapy being past focused.
Coaching is looking into the future by working on goals or bringing a certain idea to life.
Therapy is looking into the past to see what has happened to you and how that is affecting you mentally/emotionally. The goal of therapy is healing. Also, if you have a mental health condition or psychological issues, therapy is there to provide clinical treatment.
It is important to note that sometimes there could be somewhat of an overlap between the both.
For example, if you are working with a coach on starting a creative project and you are having limiting beliefs, the coach may ask you to think about where you think those thoughts are coming from. However, the purpose here is to not “treat or heal” what is coming up for you as reflecting on your negative thoughts can bring up things from the past, but to help you become more self-aware so that you make a decision to move forward toward your goal.
On the other hand, while therapy is more past focused, this does not mean a therapist is not helping you work toward the goals you have for the future. The goal of therapy is to heal and/or treat your mental health condition while at the same time bringing you to a balance so you can move forward with your life.
How can I help you as your life coach?
I am a very honest person so with that being said I will not claim myself to be a specific kind of coach at this time because I am still in the beginning stages of figuring out my “niche.”
However, I would like to help others with:
Self-love
Building resilience
Developing a growth mindset
Learning how to overcome thoughts, feelings, or self-doubts around pursuing a goal, idea, or project
Why?
Well, I have personally worked on these certain things and I am still navigating these parts of life (I am still a work in progress).
