When There Is A Storm

When there is a storm, we never question it or fight it.

We prepare for the storm, adjust our plans, gather things we need and try our best to stay safe.

So why is it that when we experience storms in our personal lives, we question, resist, or fight it all?

If we could see that we are a reflection of nature, then we would understand that experiencing storms in our lives is part of life.

There would be more acceptance of our difficult thoughts, feelings, and challenges.

We wouldn’t need to fight, resist or question any of it.

Instead we would prepare which means figuring out what we need to do to take care of ourselves.

Instead we would adjust our plans which means making necessary changes in order to honor our wants and needs.

Instead we would gather things to lean on such as our coping skills, tools, people who support us, and resources we need to help us get by.

Instead of fighting, resisting, or questioning the storm, we would accept it.

For the past month, I’ve been in a storm. I’ve been struggling with my mental health. My OCD started to flare up. My OCD primarily shows up in my mind with obsessive thoughts and makes me think the worst of others. I’ve been crying almost every day.

Because of this, I decided to get off social media for 1-2 months. I am currently in therapy and requested to be seen twice a week because I am getting triggered a lot. I am also attending support groups. While deciding to get off social media and receive treatment for my OCD are ways I am trying to take care of myself, I have to admit for the most part I haven’t been coping in the best ways. This is where I am at and sometimes just want to leave it the way it is and not push myself too much (hoping that makes sense).

I can see how this theme of learning how to practice acceptance keeps appearing in my life so I can really learn how to accept what I am experiencing. I am constantly fighting thoughts and feelings I believe I shouldn’t have but fail to realize I cannot control these things. You cannot get rid of negative thoughts but we can learn how to coexist with them and not let it dictate our life which essentially means accepting it all.
